Written by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, the book Half of a Yellow Sun remains a classic historical fiction novel that tells a beautiful story about post-independence Nigeria. It focuses on the lives of some young Nigerians as they struggle to survive the early 1960s Biafra war.

The main characters are Olanna, her lover/husband Odenigbo, and her sister, Kainene.

Olanna’s empathetic nature is rather endearing. Despite Odenigbo’s mistake of getting Amala, the woman his mother chose for him, pregnant, Olanna takes Amala’s child in as hers. Few African women would do that today. She nurtures the girl child as her own.

Social class is also depicted in the book. You could see how Olanna’s parents used their influence to flee to London.

It was quite interesting that Mama’s disapproval of Olanna’s relationship with her son Odenigbo did not hinder Olanna from getting married to him. The two love birds stayed with each other regardless of the challenges.

Even Olanna’s sister, Kainene, showed so much maturity by forgiving Olanna for sleeping with her lover, Richard. Forgiveness is one remarkable trait found in both sisters. Later in the story, Richard and Kainene still maintain their relationship.

One aspect that seems questionable is how Kainene goes missing. At first, it looked like she had died. But who knows? She may have fled the country, like her parents. Perhaps she was tired of the war. Will we ever know?

The book intricately weaves together themes of love, betrayal, and forgiveness.
